About the Ohana:

From Boardworks:

Ohana developed the 12-6 and 14 TR (Touring/Race) to be an all around design for any level of paddler who may want to paddle for fitness training, pleasure or competitive racing. The cutting nose entry and stable rail and bottom contours make this shape perform extremely well in rough and windy conditions into the wind, down wind and mixed swells. In flat water conditions the TR series has a smooth entry and great tail release, being one of the most quiet designs that Ohana has produced.

The 10’6 TR is a smaller fun version of the 12’6 and 14′ TR’s. With the same design characteristics , it was built for juniors or smaller men and women that want the same speed and stability attributed to the 12’6 & 14′, without the additional length and volume. Fun, Fast and stable, the 10’6 TR completes the quiver for the whole family.

The Ohana TR series construction: 1 pound EPS foam, epoxy resins over 2 layers fiberglass top and bottom with another layer within the console area. Deck is gloss and polish with a sanded bottom finish. Shape includes a domed deck to repel water over the top surface and a flat console for foot placement. Console runs out the tail to remove any water which may wash onto the deck area. The boards come with a deck pad. Race fin is not included.

While the C4 boards are also great for touring, they're even better for open ocean paddling and downwinders.

Surf City will be the first surf shop in Wilmington, Wrightsville Beach and Southeast NC to offer the new Ohana SUPs from Boardworks this Spring. This is big news!

(Encinitas, Ca) January 20, 2011–Bob Reed and Russell Coble, co-founders of Ohana Paddle Board company announced today that they have selected Encinitas based Boardworks to manufacture and sell their new category of S.U.P. boards, worldwide. Reed noted, “Our objective is to work with BW to bring a new collection of higher performance boards to a much broader user group. We will marry the speed of our custom boards with new more stable boards suitable for touring, fitness paddling and citizen racing. The new boards are light, fast and stable.”

Boardworks’ Mike Fox noted, “We are flattered that Ohana would select Boardworks to manufacture and market their new boards. Their reputation for performance race boards is virtually unmatched despite their modesty about their successes. They have won 30 of the 42 events they have entered including wins in the Molokai, The Catalina Classic, the Battle of the Paddle in Hawaii and Dana Point, the Worlds in Australia, plus the International and US Championships. Ohana Paddle Board Company was founded in 1996 by Bob Reed and Russel Coble, two high school buddies from Orange County. Wrightsville represented in worldwide SUP competition
Wrightsville Beach native and former U.S. Surf Team competitor Chris Curry was born to be on the water. He was surrounded by it. His father, Bill Curry, a former longboard pro, and his mother, Georgia Curry, were founders of the Wrightsville Beach Longboard Association (WBLA), and everyone in his family devoted much of their time to catching waves.
So, when a new board sport surfaced in 1960 and trended to float from its Hawaiian origins to other places, like Wrightsville Beach, Curry gave no second thoughts to giving stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) a run two years ago.
Earlier this month he competed in the Rainbow Sandals Battle of the Paddle, under California-based sponsor Boardworks Surf—one of the largest producers of SUPs. On Oct. 2-3, Curry, along with his father and four other men—Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach residents John Beausang and William Pope, and North Carolinians Chris Hill of Holly Ridge and Stan Clinard of Kure Beach—met in Dana Point, Calif. for the two-day premiere event.
Held at Doheny State Beach Park, Curry explained, "It’s probably one of the biggest races, if not the biggest race, of the year. It’s considered, kind of like, the world championships of stand-up paddleboarding."
That’s one that consists, mostly, of top-performing paddlers from Hawaii and California, but also from all other parts of the world including Tahiti, Europe and Brazil.
"It’s amazing, the number of people that are participating," Curry furthered. "I think that there were 850-some paddlers, so that gives you a sense, just within the short time, that the sport has really gained traction—it’s already deeply rooted. You can tell from the youth…"
Curry said that though most of the paddlers were adult competitors, there were around 50 children entered in their own division, the youngest of them, age 6.
And then there were the legends that have crossed over into the sport, like Gerry "Mr. Pipeline" Lopez and Mickey Munoz—a classic longboarder.
"He’s 72 years old," Curry said, "and he was pushing through waves about waist- to chest-high and not even blinking."
Out of the four main races, Curry competed in three—elite pro, in which he placed 25th out of 125 paddlers; distance (10 mile), in which he placed 2nd in his age class; 14-foot, in which he placed 10th; and overall, in which he placed 24th out of the 170 competitors. In the team relay race, Curry helped his sponsor team, consisting of three males and one female, finish in
7th place out of 50 total teams.
"I was really happy," Curry said of the results. "I’m racing against guys from California and Hawaii that train four or five hours a day. They do outrigger canoe paddling. They’re in the gym. This is their job. So it gave me a really good idea of what I need to do for next year."

The nose: THE NOSE IS A DEVELOPMENT BASED ON OUR WORK WITH RACING CATAMARANS. WE CALL IT A WAVE-PIERCING BOW. THE IDEA IS THE CUT CLEANLY THROUGH CHOP WITHOUT ADDING A LOT OF DRAG. ESSENTIALLY, LESS WATER IS PUSHED AROUND AS THE BOW PENETRATES THROUGH A WAVE, AND THEREFORE LESS OF YOUR PADDLING ENERGY IS USED TO PROPEL THE BOARD FORWARD.

Tail: THE TAIL IS DESIGNED TO MINIMIZE WETTED SURFACE AREA AND DRAG, RELEASE WATER CLEANLY, AND TO PERFORM WELL WHILE SURFING WAVES. WE WENT FOR A WIDER TAIL THAN THE ZOOM MODEL SO THAT THE BOARD SURFS BETTER AND HAS MORE DYNAMIC STABILITY FOR OPEN OCEAN AND SURFING CONDITIONS LIKE THOSE ENCOUNTERED IN THE BOP.

Rocker: THE ROCKER LINE IS A RESULT OF INTEGRATING THE VARIOUS SHAPE DETAILS THAT MAKE UP THE THREE-DIMENSIONAL SHAPE OF THE BOARD. WE START OUT WITH CERTAIN SHAPE PARAMETERS THAT ARE DEFINED IN ORDER TO MAXIMIZE SPEED WHILE MAINTAINING THE STABILITY THAT IS DESIRED. WE DON'T START OUT WITH A PARTICULAR ROCKER LINE IN MIND BUT LET IT EVOLVE AS WE OPTIMIZE THE SHAPE. ALL THAT SAID, THE ROCKER LINE IS A FAIRLY SMOOTH ORGANIC CURVE WITH MAXIMUM DEPTH JUST BEHIND THE MID POINT OF THE BOARD.

Deck: THE FORWARD PART OF THE DECK IS DESIGNED TO SHED WATER AND IS AN EXTENSION OF THE WAVE-PIERCING STYLE NOSE. THE STANDING AREA IS FAIRLY FLAT TO ALLOW EXCELLENT MOBILITY WHILE PADDLING AND SURFING WAVES. THE STANDING AREA IS RECESSED A BIT TO LOWER THE PADDLER'S CENTER OF GRAVITY.

Rails: THE RAILS ARE VERY ROUNDED FORWARD AND TRANSITION TO A HARDER SHAPE AS YOU GO TOWARD THE TAIL.
Fin-Box: THIS IS A STANDARD 10.5" FIN BOX SET ABOUT 18" FORWARD OF THE TAIL.

Material: THESE BOARDS ARE CURRENTLY MADE BY CNC SHAPING AN EPS BLANK AND THEN COVERING WITH A LIGHT WEIGHT AND STIFF CARBON FIBER LAMINATE. WE HAVE EXPERIMENTED WITH SEVERAL FOAM DENSITIES AND LAMINATES. WE HAVE ALSO FOUND THAT THE CARBON BOARDS ARE FASTER BECAUSE THEY ARE STIFFER AND THE PADDLER'S ENERGY IS USED TO PROPEL THE BOARD FORWARD RATHER THAN FLEXING THE BOARD WITH EACH STROKE.
